On February 4, 1976, the Motagua Fault broke with a magnitude of 7.5, northeast of Guatemala City, devastating the small towns in the countryside. In the summer that year I went to Guatemala to work with the Salvation Army in the construction of small homes for displaced families in the town of Tecpán, on the Inter-American Highway, west of Guatemala City.
