In August 2005 air quality warnings were issued for about 90 percent of the Alaskan interior. Conditions were "...very unhealthy...to hazardous..." because more than 100 wildfires were burning across the state. At the time we were present the great Denali, often concealed from landscape photographers by clouds, was in clear air. So, by the perverse character of rare opportunities in wilderness travel, for us it was also simultaneously shrouded with smoke.
